Watch Joe Satriani rocking out on a cheap guitar.

The great video below shows Joe Satriani rocking out on a Cheap Guitar and it makes great viewing!

If you have ever wondered what happens when you mix a really cheap guitar with one of the world’s greatest guitarists then wonder no more.  The answer is a bit harsh sounding but is instantly recognizable as the great Joe Satriani playing his classic song Surfing with the Alien.

Now this video has been around for a while but it does show quite nicely that it is the guitarist that makes the guitar and not the other way around.  You can buy the most expensive guitar fitted with the hottest pickups and run it through a cool amp and it will still sound rubbish if you aren’t very good.

The video captures Satriani playing a cheap strat copy through a Digitech RP 200 multi effects guitar pedal and a Peavey Backstage 30 amp.  Although the sound is a little harsh there is no mistaking the tune and it is interesting to see Satriani improvise over his own song where, without a whammy bar he could not do his trademark divebombs and the Satch Scream.

Of course Satriani makes it look easy but it may not have been as easy as it would appear.  Certainly at the end he can be heard to say “That was a little painful on this guitar.”

Whether he was referring to the sound or the guitar is up for debate.  However, what it does show is that even the cheapest guitar can be made to sound good.  So if you are the proud owner of a budget guitar or are looking to buy one be re-assured that even the cheapest can be made to sound good.

If you have never seen the video it is well worth watching if for nothing else to marvel at the prowess of Joe Satriani.

Enjoy!
