Welcome to this the first in a new series of articles on Top Guitars where we cover the guitar that we have chosen as the Top Guitars Guitar of the Month. This is a new series where we focus in on the guitar that really has grasped our attention over the month. It has to be a guitar that, when we see it, we just want to get out hands on it and give it a play. Well we think that our first guitar for Guitar of the Month is an absolute cracker and is worthy of the title. Without further delay we would like to introduce you to the D&C X-Fusion.
What do we look for when we choose our Guitar of the Month? It is difficult to put your finger on what it is that makes your pulse race when you see a guitar. The illusive X factor that just makes you think I need that guitar
Who are D&C Steel Body Guitars?
D&C Steel Body Guitars is a one man guitar workshop based out of Bilzen in Belgium. Dennis Louis is the genius behind D&C Steel Body Guitars who perhaps started making guitars by accident. In 2008, unable to afford an expensive guitar Louis chose to build his first guitar! We are glad that he didn’t have the money.
Louis admits that his preferred material to work with is steel. So when it came to choosing the material of construction for his new guitar steel was the obvious choice. The first guitar that he built was constructed from 3 mm steel plate and weighed in at a hefty 6.6 kg, which he admits was too heavy. He has since perfected his technique, using thinner steel plate, and most of his guitars weigh in at a reasonable 3.2 – 3.7 kg.
Although the bodies are made of steel the necks are made from wood. However, Louis says that he has plans for something different for his necks as he is experimenting with steel necks.
What about the D&C X-Fusion?
The D&C X-Fusion is an absolutely awesome looking guitar! If you are looking for a guitar that has real impact then the D&C X-Fusion is the guitar for you. It draws its inspiration from the stalwarts of heavy metal guitars – the Explorer, the Destroyer and the Snakebyte.
As Louis custom builds all of his guitars it can be set-up however you want it with choice of neck wood, pick-ups and hardware. But the D&C X-Fusion that really caught our eye was a custom build for Metallica. You can check out this awesome guitar in the video below.
The body of the guitar is fabricated from steel and is finished with an amazing red/black relic effect. As you would expect from a Metallica inspired guitar this D&C X-Fusion is equipped with two EMG James Hetfield pickups. The neck is mahogany with a dark Indian ebony fretboard. It is truly a stunning guitar and worthy of being our Top Guitars Guitar of the Month.
