The Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 a great re-interpretation of a classic hollow body electric guitar. We love it!
If you like the look of a hollow body electric but can’t stretch to the prices of a Gibson then the Epiphone range is a great place to start. In particular we like the Epiphone Riviera Custom P93.
Hollow body electrics have a certain attraction, especially the sound quality that can be achieved, which makes them essential for certain genres of music. However, even if you are a rocker the charms of the hollow body electric make them an attractive instrument and worthy of consideration. This is certainly true of the Epiphone Riviera Custom P93. Epiphone have been making guitars for quite sometime and if you can’t stretch to affording a Gibson then it makes sense to trade down to an Epiphone. Personally I have never considered Gibson and always preferred Epiphone, as essentially you get a Gibson without the name.
The Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 is modeled after one of Epiphone’s most enduring classics, the Riviera. The Riviera was first introduced in the early 1960s, and rapidly became a favourite amongst guitarists. The Epiphone Riviera’s semi-hollow design has been a favourite of players from all musical genres and throughout the years. Notable among Riviera users are greats such as Otis Rush, Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground, and the strokes’ Nick Valensi. The reason they all loved the Riviera was because the guitars legendary ES-body shape could produce tones with any pickup variation. Over the years, the Riviera has been seen with humbuckers, mini-humbuckers, and P-90s.
But now the Epiphone Riviera Custom P-93 has the rare distinction of giving players a new sound and a new distinctive look. The Epiphone Riviera Custom P-93 uses 3 Epiphone “Dogear” Alnico-V P-90 pickups for a punch that leaves all other three-single coil pickup guitars in the dust. And when matched with the bell-like tones of the ES-style body, a Bigsby B70 tremelo, plus a metallic gold finish with nickel hardware or a wine red finish with gold hardware, the Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 is hard to put down.
Constructed from maple and with a rosewood topped mahogany neck the Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 is well put together. The 22 fret neck has the Epiphone Slim Taper D profile neck which is comfortable to play and with the double cut-away body construction the upper frets are easily accessible.
The Locktone tune-o-matic bridge combined with the Bigsby B70 tailpiece is a classic combination for gentle pitch bends. Combine this with the Wilkinson 14:1 tuners and you have an excellent quality guitar at a pretty remarkable price.
The acoustic tone of the guitar is fantastic but it is when plugged in that this guitar really demonstrates what it can do. To hear it really come alive checkout the video below.
If you are looking for an amazing value hollow body electric then the Epiphone Riviera Custom P93 is certainly a guitar worthy of your consideration. You can find out more details at the Epiphone website or can purchase direct from Amazon where it currently retails for £339.
