Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnaught – The perfect budget acoustic guitar?

Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnaught

Is the Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnaught the perfect budget acoustic guitar?

Is the Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnaught the perfect budget acoustic guitar?  Well we think it has a lot to recommend it and would certainly put it at the top of our list of budget acoustic guitars.

The humble acoustic guitar is, for most of us, the instrument we first pick up and strum when we learn to play the guitar.  But chose the wrong acoustic guitar and you could find you rapidly lose interest in playing.  There are however, some very good budget acoustic guitars on the market and the Epiphone DR-1oo Dreadnaught is certainly one of them.

Epiphone is a well respected manufacturer of acoustic and electric guitars.  As part of the Gibson Guitar Company Epiphone have traditionally been seen as the entry level instrument of choice for those who would like a Gibson but who can’t quite afford the Gibson price tag.  I count myself to be very much in this group!  As such you can expect an Epiphone to have been produced against the Gibson quality standards and so can expect a real pedigree guitar.

But what does the Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnaught have to offer?

Well for a budget acoustic guitar the Dreadnaught has been put together very well.  The sides and back are mahogany and the top of the guitar is spruce.  These are great tone woods for an acoustic guitar and certainly unexpected on a guitar at this price.  The slim tapered neck is mahogany with a 20 fret rosewood fingerboard and has a standard 25.5″ scale length and a nut width of 1.69″.  The action, that is the height of the string from the fretboard, is not too high and there is no fret buzz when you play up and down the neck.  This all gives rise to a very comfortable neck which is a delight to play, ideal for the new guitarist.

What does the Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnaught sound like when played?

The main grumble we have with cheap acoustic guitars is that they can have a very thin sound.  The Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnaught has none of these issues.  The tone is warm and resonant with a beautiful sustain.  The combination of the mahogany and spruce really gives a great sounding guitar which sounds more expensive than the price tag would suggest.

In conclusion the Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnaught is an amazing budget acoustic guitar.  It has long been Epiphones best selling acoustic guitar and we can see why.  If you are after a budget acoustic guitar then you really should take a look at the Epiphone DR-100 Dreadnaught.
