I was listening to the radio in the car the other day when She Does it Right by Dr Feelgood boomed out of the speakers and truly brightened up my day. The sound of Dr Feelgood is dominated by the choppy guitar playing style of the great Wilko Johnson and which is perhaps best demonstrated on this track.
Sadly the radio station were running a piece on Wilko’s farewell tour, which unlike some other well known musicians, really will be his last as he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. Hearing the track reminded me of the simple guitar technique used to such great effect by Wilko Johnson throughout his career. The power of the technique is that he batters the guitar to produce a driving rhythm which really is at the centre of the Dr Feelgood sound.
The way Wilko used to move around the stage, in what can only be described as a wide eyed manic walk, made it look so easy. But then the best guitarists always do seem to make it look so effortless.
Searching for information on his playing style I came across this brilliant video with the great Wilko discussing his technique.
A truly great guitarist…
