Does Dr Who Really Play the Guitar?

does dr who really play the guitar

Dr Who playing the guitar certainly grabbed our attention. But does Dr Who really play the guitar? Turns out he does.

Many of you, not as many as the last series it turns out, will have watched the first episode of the new series of Dr Who to see an axe wielding Doctor and I don’t mean the wood chopping variety.  The question that grabbed me when I watched it?  Does Dr Who really play the guitar?

Now I must admit at this point that I am not a major fan of Dr Who, but it is a favourite amongst the kids so the TV was on and it would be rude not to watch it.  I am glad I did.  About half way through the episode the Dr was introduced in, what for me, was an attention grabbing scene.  Out of the darkness standing on a battle tank came a guitar playing Dr Who.  So does Dr Who really play the guitar.  Now of course the cynic in me said that it wasn’t the actor, Peter Capaldi, playing the guitar but it turns out that I was completely wrong.

Peter Capaldi the actor who plays Dr Who is in fact a very good guitarist and was more than happy to show off his talents for the Dr Who audience.

Capaldi said “I was really delighted to open the script and find the Doctor playing the guitar”.  He went on to say “I think I’d sort of half mentioned it in joking, but I was really delighted that these guys went for it as an idea”.

It turns out that Capaldi is a dab hand at the guitar having played guitar in a band called the Dreamboys, formerly the Bastards From Hell, when he was a young man.

If you saw the piece you might also be wondering what guitar he was playing.  Capaldi says “We had a great day when I went to pick up the Doctor’s guitar.  We went to Denmark Street and went to various vintage guitar shops looking for Doctor Who’s guitar.  And at first I thought it should look like a Stratocaster or a Telecaster, one of those old classic guitars, but they all started to look like I was having a mid life crisis”.  In the end they picked a guitar that Capaldi describes as “a guitar that looked like a Fender Stratocaster that had been described to someone who had never seen one”.

You can catch-up on some of the scenes from Saturday’s Dr Who and hear Peter Capaldi talking about the guitar playing scene by checking out the video below.
